Post-Whitening Care: Protecting and Maintaining Your Brighter Smile

Clients reviewing the aftercare guide.

Your smile is brighter and more radiant—and now it’s time to protect your investment. Following proper aftercare is the key to keeping your results long-lasting and minimizing any temporary sensitivity.

Below are our expert-approved aftercare guidelines to help you enjoy your brightest grin for as long as possible.

The First Hour: Stick to Clear Liquids

Immediately after your treatment, your teeth are slightly more porous and can easily absorb stains. For the first hour, only drink clear liquids—such as water. Avoid anything colored or acidic. This gives your enamel time to rehydrate and helps preserve that fresh, white finish.

The First 24 Hours: Avoid Staining and Acidic Foods

For the first 24 hours, your diet matters most. Stay away from dark or highly pigmented foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, pop, tomato sauces, curry, soy sauce or berries.

Also, avoid acidic foods (like citrus or vinegar) that can irritate enamel. Think of it as following a “white-shirt diet”—if it would stain a white shirt, it could stain your teeth.

Manage Sensitivity the Right Way

It’s common to experience mild tooth or gum sensitivity after whitening. Here’s how to keep it under control:

  • If you feel gum irritation, apply the vitamin E oil provided by your Grin Whitening technician directly to the affected area. It soothes the tissue and helps with recovery.

  • If tooth sensitivity persists, take an Advil or ibuprofen to help reduce discomfort.

  • Sensitivity usually subsides within 24–48 hours.

If you’re unsure or if sensitivity continues beyond a couple of days, give us a call and speak with one of our trained technicians—we’re happy to guide you through the next steps.

Gentle Brushing and Oral Care

Your teeth and gums may be more sensitive than usual for a short period, so keep your brushing routine gentle. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid brushing too hard or using whitening toothpaste right after your session. Continue to floss daily, but be cautious around any tender areas.

Maintain Your Whitening Results

Once the first 24 hours have passed, resume your regular diet—but try to limit foods and drinks known to cause staining, such as coffee and red wine. Rinse your mouth with water after consuming them, or drink through a straw to minimize contact with your enamel.

To extend your results, our Calgary team recommends:

  • Regular touch-up whitening treatments

  • Professional cleanings every six months

  • At-home whitening products recommended by your technician

At Grin Whitening Clinic, our Calgary-based technicians are always here to help you keep that brilliant, healthy smile glowing.
